3.5 stars — OK, this is going to sound really weird, but I had a strong sense of deja vu reading this book…like I could have sworn I’ve read it before. But since it just released, I honestly don’t get it. I wondered if perhaps it was previously included in an anthology and that’s why, but I can’t find any reference. So either I’m crazy or…well, crazy?

This one had a lot of great things going for it, and a few things that will inevitably convince me to round down. The story is told almost exclusively from Dylan’s POV, and I must say that I was not enchanted with the man we meet at the beginning. He was a dick. The problem is that we’re really not given any explanation for his attitude until way later in the story! And I needed it earlier in order to understand him and connect with him. As the story plays out, I do NOT understand why he reacts differently to Alex, Noelle and Seth, and it feels like a really quick turnaround. Especially because he’s SUPER snobby and mean at other moments. I needed more depth there, and I needed it earlier. I don’t even remember when we finally learn about his youth, and the part Arlene plays, but it was too late by that point.

Now, saying all that, if I can ignore the cold, mean Dylan, then I LOVED the adorable, clueless, just wants love Dylan that we meet in Nova Scotia. I loved the way he connected with Alex and her family and really wanted to belong with them. There were so many sweet moments between him and Noelle especially that made him endearing. So it’s kind of a case of if I can pretend the other stuff doesn’t exist, then I’m okay!

Alex was a pretty likable heroine as well. She was strong, independent, hard-working, and caring even despite Dylan’s ath-hole tendencies. I still don’t quite understand her mood swings, that kind of felt like a lampshade was hung on it… And because we only briefly get in her head, I don’t feel quite as connected to her.

Their chemistry was pretty solid, even as it was quick. I didn’t always understand it initially, but again, if I just accepted it then I enjoyed myself more.

I will admit that the plot dragged out way longer at the end than I was expecting. It was like we got the climax I was expecting at like 70%, but then the book just kept going. That always throws me off, but at the same time it was fun to see what basically added up to an extended epilogue, finding out what happened after the HEA. So I kind of liked it in the end.

Noelle was super sweet, even if I do normally hate spelled out speech impediments. Hers didn’t bother me quite as much as normal, b/c I didn’t feel like it was done for a cutesy effect, but because of her missing front teeth. Seth was a refreshingly realistic teen, complete with mood swings. And even in spite of that, I liked him.

So all in all it was a sweet read, I just wish we’d gotten Dylan’s background a bit earlier (and a bit more), so I wouldn’t have maintained my reservations about him. But I’m an overthinker, so it’s not likely to bother others as it did me.

Christmas Sugar InstaSpark Book 2 edition by Melanie Moreland Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I was in a place when I needed something good to read, something that would help me relax from what was a very tough year for me. Not surprisingly, I found this in a story written by my favorite author, Melanie Moreland. Christmas Sugar details the life of Dylan Maxwell, a man devoid of all things sweet. He seems to be as bland as the black coffee he drinks. His only redeeming quality...his obvious love for his assistant who is retiring. All that changes when he takes an unwanted business trip to a supposedly sleepy little town and meets three people who change everything for him. Don't get me wrong, just because Dylan shows no sweet characteristics in the beginning, this book doesn't start as bitter pill that becomes easier to swallow when he meets Alexis (Alex). I laughed from the minute his retiring assistant, Arlene, called him out for his behavior towards Amy, the new assistant. I laughed when he actually thought he would have a bottle of Courvoisier waiting for him at a place called "The Sleepy Moose Inn". And I absolutely ROFLMAO when he met Seth. Not only did Seth have to explain what ROFLMAO meant, he also had good advice..."Hope your coat's warm. It's colder than a witch's tit out there!" From the time he meets Alex, you saw the conflict in him, however, I personally believe meeting her daughter Noelle, started his path to sweetness. Her sweet little lisp when she asked "Dywan! Iz you da ath-hole?" OMG! I feel for that little girl then. I think his path was decided then, and Alex was the sugar on top!

This is an absolutely wonderful story! I read through it twice in as many days! It was just what I needed! I loved watching Dylan's transformation into the sweet book boyfriend that Melanie writes so well!
Dylan Maxwell is a bit of a diva who uses one mode of communicating -- yelling. In his defense, he's worked hard to make his multi-million dollar company a success, and he lives, eats and breathes Maxwell Corp. Alex Walsh takes care of everything and everyone at the Sleepy Moose Inn. It's been her home all of her adult life, but business is down and bills have piled up, so the only choice now is to sell the inn. Her head has accepted this, her heart not so much, so it’s no surprise that Alex gives prospective buyer Dylan a frosty welcome when he arrives at the inn.

Ms. Moreland has done it again, because the early copy I read of this book was fantastic! What is better than a workaholic, grumpy alpha having his world turned upside down and finding everything he never knew he needed? In spite of his prickly outer shell, Alex manages to see beyond Dylan's façade to his vulnerable heart that longs for love. With a wonderful cast of secondary characters, an engaging storyline and the most adorable, endearing four-year-old ever to grace the pages of romance, this is a humorous, heart warming, poignant holiday story that is sure to please your romantic heart.

Beautiful Christmas story. Loved it so much.
Dylan Maxwell is a very wealthy business man who is very busy and has no time for sweetness and light in his life.
Until, on a business trip, he meets a teenager, a lisping little girl and a sassy hardworking sexy woman and he will find out that he really can’t live without the sweetness and live he’d been avoiding all his life.
Love this authors book so much and she always writes the best book boyfriends.
Dylan was a snob at the beginning but redeemed himself rather quickly. Loved his relationship with Seth and so freaking love him with Noelle.
He was perfect for Alex.
And that epilogue was so beautiful.
