Well, this second outing wasn't as readable or enjoyable as Flood, the first Burke novel. I really loved the character of Flood - - Strega, not so much. Of course, Burke didn't like her much either, but that didn't stop him from hopping into bed at her beck and call. Annoying. But all that said, I did like the book enough to want to move on to #3. When reading these, we must keep in mind that Burke inhabits 1985-87 New York, not the New York of today. It's seedier and more violent, at least in the places inhabited by Burke and his cohorts. The plot, revolving around sexual abuse of a certain little boy, is revolting, as is some of the scenes where Burke interviews some people who know the subject area. Tread carefully, as these things may keep you from wanting to read this series at all...good to know ahead of time before you spend your time and money. The great introductions to Max the Silent, the Mole, and the Prophet that the reader received in Flood stood me in good stead here, because their lives were not explained again in Strega, even though they figured prominently in the story and especially in the denouement. The denouement itself was complicated abd magnificent, and the bad guys got what was coming to them. Very satisfying. And no cliff hangers! Thank you for that, Mr. Vachss.Product details

A good book
A good story well written. The only drawback for me is that characters, settings, and equipment have such fantastic capabilities that it takes the story into fantasy-land. Everything is as perfect as the main character would want it to be.
This second of the Burke novels introduces us to the witch Strega, ok maybe she is not really a witch but she certainly has witch-like qualites and she needs Burke's help. Once again we are drawn into the gritty underworld inhabited by Burke his loyal dog Pansy and the rest of his "family". Hard bitten crime-noir at it's best.
weird but good
Strega is classic Andrew Vachss. His detailed character development paints an intimate and personal view into Burke's world where he & his colorful 'family' provide justice to victims of some of society's worst predators. Set within the fringe elements of society, although Vachss' Burke frequently violates the statutory criminal codes, Burke always remains true to his personal code and unquestionably loyal to his family. -- Although the subject of this story is somewhat unsettling, as are the villians in many of Vachss' novels, this book is a must read for any Burke follower or fan of noir type fiction.
A couple years ago, I read Flood, the first book in Andrew Vachss's series of Burke novels. It was a good novel, albeit rather grim. I always figured I'd read another in the series, but it kind of fell off the radar for a while until recently. With Strega, the second book in the series, I am back to Burke and this time I think I'll stick with him for a while.
Burke is an unlicensed private eye working the mean city streets. Although he has something of a moral code, he is also a scammer and petty crook who's done time and could easily be doing it again. In Burke's world, there are the citizens (the "regular" folk who are law-abiding) and the street-wise, who exist on the fringes. Burke is clearly in this second class as are most of his acquaintances.
In Strega, Burke is drafted by the title character to obtain a photograph. This Polaroid of her young nephew documents an act of pedophilia; she feels that if she can destroy the photo in front of the boy that he will begin to recover from the trauma. For Burke, this is a needle in a haystack sort of case, but he takes it on, motivated primarily by the promise of big money (and some not-so-subtle threats). His search will take him into the seedy world of child pornography.
The supporting characters in the Burke books are both a strong point and a weakness. On the one hand, they make the story more interesting; on the other hand, they are generally so off-beat that they can take away from the gritty realism we have Max the deaf-mute killer giant, the Prof who constantly speaks in rhyme, Mama Wong the restaurant owner who is almost a stereotype and Michelle the transvestite prostitute with a heart of gold. Yes, they are entertaining, but they're on the brink of being silly which is not an adjective that fits well with this story (fortunately that line is never really crossed).
The only other real flaw with this book is that it takes a while (nearly 100 pages) for the plot to really go anywhere. Fortunately, there is enough going on outside the main story to keep the reader intrigued. Strega is a nice, tough-guy mystery that is a good, fast read. If you like your crime stories, hard-boiled, this should satisfy your appetite.
Just read it, but I would strongly urge you to start your Vachss with "Flood". The series' main character Burke does better with an introduction and "Strega" is the second novel. All of the elements are cooking Burkes's easy paranoia is always on the front burner, and his circle of odd helpers are in full gear. The Burke novels are impossible missions into an impenetrable shadow world that can be influenced by a motley though inventively committed team. There is someone there for everyone -- Max the mute, deaf brutally strong good guy, Mole who lives in garbage and is a fallen genius, Michelle your stellar and authentic multitasking transvestite. And there are others. Burke's instruments. Careful Vachss's Burkes are addictive. I'm well into "Blue Belle". You see, I've just started.
