From the very start, one is captivated by Coffey’s voice—“I come to this place of darkness because it is where the light of heaven once touched. I come here for the ones who were saved on a night long ago and for the ones lost. I come because heaven is not without the past.” There is so much here that causes one to stop and consider—“I come into this world pure and unblemished, but I will leave it bearing all of my scars. My comfort rests in a grace that will mold those scars into the jewels of my crown.”

There is a hint of the paranormal, which adds an intriguing element and would make for a fascinating topic of discussion as to what it is; what it represents, of what is real and what is not.

Coffey’s powers of description create a sense of place which places the reader directly into the story—“Frogs sang along a prattling creek beyond the open window. Far away a train whistled as it lumbered through the center of town.” Coffey is one of those authors whose words can strike such a cord, one may feel the need to record and preserve them—“Because to those great watching eyes, the world is always neither bright nor dim. Because there is darkness in man and also a light, and by their mingling with world lies at eventide.”

In the midst of everything we, the readers, are trying to understand, comes a classic, ordinary plot twist. One can become taken with the imagery, yet still be reminded that there is a good, often suspenseful, story being told. At the same time, there is a strong spiritual theme and a reminder of the good that can come with simple beliefs—“Despite what Kate and Taylor and I always thought, it was choice rather than fate that governed our lives.” And who doesn’t love a book that includes a quote from poem “A Dream Within a Dream” by Edgar Allan Poe.

“The Devil Walks in Mattingly” is a wonderful read with a bit of everything, spirituality, suspense, just a very small touch of the paranormal, the price of sins and pride but followed by redemption.

This was a very different book. The first half of it I was confused as to what was going on and the past of the characters that was pushing them. This past made a huge difference in understanding the book and the motives of the characters. It would have been a better read for me to have known this early on.
I've come to really like this series. It's just sweet enough, not sappy or overly emotional. The spiritual elements make me think about my beliefs, and the plot is very interesting. I feel the author definitely has his personal beliefs, and gets them across to his readers, but not in way that makes you feel as though he's trying to convert you to his church. I appreciate that. I have come to like the characters who live in the pleasant town of Mattingly.
O! Ohmygoodness! I'm pretty sure this is going to be #1 or #2 of my top 10 books for 2015. This book is amazing. ABSOLUTELY. This is another one that gets in your skin, and lives with you far after you have turned that last page. I had never read anything by him, but will most assuredly read, and read until I have read his all up. Get it. Read it. AMAZING! D
Billy Coffey has a way of making you wonder what is reality and what isn’t. His storytelling in The Devil Walks in Mattingly is masterful, and i enjoyed returning to a familiar setting. This book follows the same path as his previous stories, and I appreciate the familiarity of the settings.

I have always insisted that if you are a fan of Andy Griffith and Mayberry, and if you are a fan of the suspenseful, supernatural elements found in Frank Peretti’s stories, you will immediately connect with Billy Coffey’s work.

Billy is able to demonstrate life in rural, mountain settings with remarkable accuracy, without mocking that lifestyle. Quite the contrary, he celebrates that lifestyle, and does a spectacular job of bringing his characters to life.
I loved this book set in the small town of Mattingly. Bill Coffey's writing style is very unique and the development of his characters is simply astounding. Proof of this is the compassion I begin to feel for Taylor Hathcock, a crazy man living in the mountains for the past 20 years. However, it is easy to love the members of the Barnett family - Jake, Kate, and little Zach.

This is a great story that delves into people struggling with forgiveness. Not necessarily struggling to forgive, but struggling to accept God's forgiveness for their sins. Guilt over the last 20 years consumes Jake and Kate and they cannot forgive themselves or believe in the forgiveness offered by God. The story is really quite moving and many will be able to relate with some of their own past regrets.

This story easily earns 5 stars and I'm ready to devour In the heart of the Dark Wood. I highly recommend this book and author.
Mattingly, Virginia Sheriff Jake Barnett, his wife Kate, and Taylor Hathcock have spent twenty years wrought with guilt for their roles in the death of Phillip McBride. While his death was ruled a suicide, these three people know better and each would say they killed Phillip. Each have dealt with their guilt in their own unique way. Phillip has haunted Jake’s dreams every night as Jake has tried to bury Phillip without success. Kate has busied herself doing good for others trying to earn her penance while Taylor has gone absolutely mad. Jake has spent his life trying to live in the shadow of his father Justus never earning his approval. Things come to a head when Phillip returns. Phillip’s return to Mattingly reveals truth to years of deceit. Grace and forgiveness meets head-on with murder, deceit, and years of lies in the middle of Happy Hollow, a place ironically named.

Billy Coffey holds the reader’s attention from chapter to chapter in a moving novel that is hard to put down. At times the reader has a hard time believing this is a work of fiction. The reader can identify with elements of each of the characters in the novel causing some soul searching.
