This was my second book by Suzanne Brockman. I very much enjoyed The Unsung Hero, although I was not totally enthralled by the heroine in that book.

This book, The Defiant Hero, is a big disappointment. The so-called heroine made stupid choices and stuck by them far too long. I really didn't like her and didn't understand the hero's attraction to her. The plot was so drawn out and boring, it put me to sleep several times. For me, the most interesting parts of the story were related to Eve's flashbacks. Also, as other reviewers have noted, there are too many different stories going on in one book, very much like a soap opera. The constantly shifting stories, points of view and time frame practically gave me whiplash.

I am not going to buy any more of Suzanne Brockman's books because I see a pattern in her female characters that I really don't like at all. Most of them come across as almost unstable or bipolar or something. Although I like the heroes better overall, instead of playing up their strengths (since she is, after all, writing about macho warriors), in the end they appear weaker than they started out. For me, a successful love story should make both parties stronger in the end.

The Defiant Hero Troubleshooters Book 2 Suzanne Brockmann 9780345463401 Books Reviews

I'm just going to rant here for a moment. Why in the world can't this e-version be fixed so there is at least 1 empty line between the change of pace. You are reading along and then hit with a different track. I know I'm not using the right terminology but I think you understand me. It made it so difficult to read this book, I almost gave up!
The plot of this second book of the "Troubleshooter"' series is much the same as the first one. There are again totally three love stories that are interwoven in this book

1. Meg and John
This is the contemporary love story between a language specialist and a member of the Troubleshooters. They had met some years ago when Meg was married and stationed together with her husband in a US embassy abroad.
Meg's daughter and grandmother have been kidnapped by some extremists and Meg seeks John's help to free them. In this way they meet with each other again.

2. Eve and Ralph
Eve is Meg's grandmother and she narrates her love story to her granddaughter Amy during their captivity. This romance took place during WW II.

3. Alyssa and Sam
Their romance hasn't yet (hopefully) reached the end. In any case, I had the impression that what I read up to know was just the introduction to something else.

Meg and John's love story was very tiresome. The main characters were only towards the end of the book able to connect to each other. But even then pieces of this part of the book were absolutely implausible. In any case, I felt only slightly rewarded for my persistence to read on towards the end of the book. Why didn't this romance "take off" earlier? There was definitely potential but I think that the "Meg character" didn't really function.

Again loads of backflashes concerning WWII? That's what I thought when Eve started to narrate her love story. But this part of the book was just great and definitely overshadowed the other two romances. I also thought that this part was very well embedded in this book.

As far as the "thing" between Sam and Alyssa is concerned I thought that this is not yet elaborated enough and there are still many further developments to be expected. Alyssa's fears concerning her carrier in a typical male profession were very well and realistically depicted.

Why only three stars? According to my opinion Brockmann tries to accommodate too many threads in on book. Furthermore, these are so completely different that I somehow lost the focus of the book. Which is exactly the main story and why? This is a pity because the author's ideas are very good, the characters very interesting but the stories interrupt each other very abruptly, killing each time the atmosphere that was attempted to be created previously. Furthermore, the different stories weren't complementing but competing each other.
Meg’s daughter and grandmother are kidnapped by terrorists and she must kidnap another terrorist to save their lives. John, a SEAL, works with the FBI to stop Meg and save the daughter and grandmother. Of course, Meg resists all help even though Meg and John have a previous relationship.

My problems with this book
1. The “banter/bitching/whining, etc., between Meg and John was just tedious.
2. There was a second romance-sorta story between another SEAL, Sam, and an FBI agent, Locke, which was really just a tease for a future book, I’m sure.
3. Even Grandma had a romance story to tell that was weaved throughout the story. Though I was interested in a French Resistance romance from WWII, not in the middle of this story.
4. TOO MUCH STUFF!! Tedious, stupid characters. Whiny women!! Wishy-washy women. Just enough!!

Warning explicit language and sexual situations.
Two of the three romances were great (Meg & John, Eve & Ralph); the 3rd 'romance' was more a sex-up ... but since I'd already read many future books in this series I could see how this 3rd romance was just the beginning of something that became much richer over time. I like the action in these books - always believable, always just the right amount to be suspenseful.

To why can't your kindle translations correctly interpret and insert section breaks? In these books that jump from story to story it is very confusing to NOT get the visual cues of section spacers to help me stop one storyline in my mind and refresh for the next. Simply can't be that technically difficult - just do it. <-- Fellow Readers I added this here because there IS much jumping between storylines in this book and I did find it annoying to have already read a few sentences before clicking in with 'oh, wait, story just switched to Eve....(or whichever)'.
