This series is one of my all time favorites. I had bought the books years ago but borrowed them to someone and never got them back. When I saw them available in a kindle version I had to buy them. These books are very dark and not for everyone, so I wouldn't recommend them to anyone closed minded or over emotional. I enjoy reading books that go into that darker side and don't have the typical good guys always win, perfect relationship, everyone is happy, type of stuff. These books show you a different side and hold nothing back. Violence? Vampires? Abusive male? Sexual Violence? Incest? It has all those and more. If these things really bother you or you are the kind of person that internalizes books and can't separate them from real life, avoid these books. If you are the like me and you enjoy seeing this darker world and you enjoy vampire stories then these are a must read. I always recommend them to my friends.

This is listed as horror as the 2 prior books were, however this has the least amount of gore. I don't typically look for horror to read, but enjoy some vampire stories so when I found the trio for a lower price than what they typically sell for out of print, I jumped on it. As you may have read the other reviews and know what the book is about so I'll comment rather than restate the obvious. Someone stated they didn't understand the reason behind one of the children's problems, but there were pages that discussed this in there. I didn't feel this book dragged like the 2nd book did when they jumped from century to century when it dragged about Simon's past a bit too contrived, but not so here. I enjoyed the side story like of Jimmy having some pleasant closure as well as Meghann & Simon. The action kept me enthralled, and the story line was hard to stop thinking about when I had to set the book down. I do hope this series can be brought back into availabilty again now that vamps are so popular right now. The prices some of these go for is outrageous but if lower would be worth it.
"Crimson Shadows," the third book by Trisha Baker featuring the characters Simon Baldevar and his consort/wife, Meghann O'Neill mainly revolves around the lives of of their twins, Elizabeth and Mikal. Elizabeth is the mortal, loving, and normal child while Mikal is an evil vampire-born creature that is the realization of the philosopher's stone. Simon originally got Meghann pregnant to produce the philosopher's stone knowing that this vampire child would be able to walk in daylight and possess powers that other vampires could only dream of possessing.
There is a lot of violence, mainly on the account of Mikal and his desire to seek and destroy his family starting with Simon, but there is also a lot of love shared between the other characters. While this book was not as exciting as the previous two, there was much action and suspense. The book also showed Simon, a ruthless killer in the previous books, as a loving father, whose heart had been so hardened, softened to a degree when the lives of his daughter, wife, and friends were in jeopardy.
I would highly recommend this book, especially to those who have read "Crimson Kiss" and "Crimson Night". "Crimson Shadows" is a good continuance of an incredible story with some surprises that will leave you shocked! I hope Trisha Baker continues with this series because she definitely leaves you wanting more and mores from these intriguing characters!!
I was a little surprised by this book. I felt let down in all honesty. The first two books are so amazing that it makes them hard acts to follow. The book started out well enough--just as juicy and exciting as I expected it to be. But I found that, as it went on, parts began to drag and my interest waned. Some parts of the book felt rushed. It felt like maybe the publisher was pushing to get the installment out and there wasn't enough time to hone and perfect. Little details were overlooked, vampires were transformed at almost a blink of an eye (half a page) were in the previous two books, it talked about the process taking a substantial amount of time. There were little plot flaws and characters that seemed hastily development--with little real substance. For example, Simon discussed not having been able to drink Mikal's blood and thinking that it would require an additional transformation process to go from regular vampire to Mikal's kind of vampire. But then Meghann drinks Simon's blood after his transformation process and even though it makes her sick, she is all of a sudden transformed? There are only a couple of scenes with Mikal and I would have expected a better developed character considering how well-rounded characters like Simon and Meghann are... It seemed at times like the author was grasping at straws, painting herself into corners and finding ludicrous ways out of the predicaments. Maybe she had finally stretched the characters a little too far. In any case, I do understand why there wasn't another installment in this series but I am--to this day--disappointed that Ms. Baker didn't decide to further her writing career. One of my favorite parts of following an author's work is the opportunity to watch him or her grow and develop as a writer. I did not have that chance in this case and I think it's a shame.

In any case, overall good read (hence three stars) but not as brilliant as the first two.
