It is difficult to really know how much of this story of a real horse is real, but I put that out of my mind and just enjoyed Marguerite Henry's writing style, and Wesley Dennis' pen-and-ink drawings. It begins with a mare named U-See-It and her breeding to Black Tomey to produce a black colt with a white marking on his forehead the Osage Indian woman named Black Gold, for the black gold of Oklahoma. A young boy named Jaydee who wants to be a jockey enters the picture and we watch both colt and child grow up, one to be a racehorse and one to be his jockey. So much fun to read, it makes me forget the sad ending, but you dwell on the determination and courage of Black Gold in his last race to help ease the pain. Young and old should enjoy this coming-of-age classic and thrill to the world of horse racing, and the love between a boy and his mount.

King of the Wind is one of my favorite books of all time. My mother bought it for me after it received the Newberry Award back in the 1940s--I was around 10 at the time and I was in love with horses! I've read the book numerous times as a child and then later as an adult as I was an elementary teacher in 4th grade; I read it to my class every year still using my original copy from childhood. Hurricane Wilma in 2005 destroyed many of my beloved books, including this one. I was thrilled to be able to find a pefect copy from of the hardback edition with a "brand-new" book jacket and it had all the beautiful paintings made by Wesley Dennis. The copy I bought was published before the book won the Newbery. I still love the wonderful story of the beautiful horse who was the father of many of the racing giants in history, including the great Man-of-War. Sham, King of the Wind, was loved by the mute stable boy Agba from Morocco and the story is a classic, filled with the tragedies and triumphs of that beloved horse and the boy who loved him.
Good story about one of the Arabian foundation sires, of the Thoroughbred horse breed. There were three main sires, the Byerly Turk, the Darley Arabian, and the Godolphin Arabian, whose lines have survived to this day. There were a few others, but their lineage has faded. This is the story of a very spoiled French king, who thought he knew everything about horses, and didn't want to take the time to learn any more. Although written for a young audience, this little book has valuable life lessons, which is worth reading and is quick.

Henry is an expert in horse stories, and this is one of her finest. King of the Wind is well-written, colorful, and pulls at your heart - even for adults!

Had to replace my copy that had been stolen. Fabulous 'true' story of the Godolphin Arabian which was one of 3 founding sires of the Thoroughbred race horse. This is the ultimate story of how much a person loves a horse and how believing in that horse can make history. If children nowadays can find that love and honor it with a horse it will change their life. It did mine . . . 2/21/14 a few comments about others reviews. There are different editions of the book including sorry paperback without illustrations. Be sure you are getting a copy that shows the gold Newberry Award seal on the cover with the bay horse's head in tasseled bridle. Marguerite Henry's books must include the Wesley Dennis illustrations as originally published or you are getting ripped off. Also the review 'bashing' historical accuracy this is a CHILD's historical novel, not a documented record for the ages. Far better told than any dry 'factual' record which would do nothing to captivate a reader!
I actually gave this as a gift to a very dear friend of mine who raises Arabian horses and had never read it...(deprived childhood?!).
This book had a profound effect on me as a child. Some of it is actually pretty troubling, so watch out when reading it to LITTLE kids. It's not all fun and games, let me tell you!
It is actually an extremely EDUCATIONAL book about the breed's origins and the rich tradition of history around the Arabian horse. Some people in the industry still refer to a sweet horse as being a "tent horse", meaning that this is the type of mare they would have brought into their tent to sleep.
I can't recommend it enough, just maybe not for kids under nine.

Marguerite Henry is a wonderful writer, pulling you into the story with her eloquence, as well as the charming, intricate drawings done by.... Roy? I'm not quite sure!
As usual, most of her inspiration is based in reality, bringing to life the history of the horse.
This is the story of "Black Gold", an influential racehorse with a strong heart. It chronicles his story from before birth to his incredible racing career.
You really get to know the characters intrinsic to his life.

This book was given to me when I was barely eight years old, almost thirty years ago. I learned how to read books that took more than one sitting with "King of the Wind".
The story is of a mute Morrocan stable boy, Agba, and a foal, Sham, who is born to one of the royal mares Agba cares for. Sham...and Agba...are selected to be part of a gift to the King of France. Their adventures in Europe are filled mostly with despair and cruelty, until Sham sires a foal that becomes the beginnings of the Thoroughbred breed we know today (this part is true; Sham was renamed "The Godolphin Arabian"; all Thoroughbreds must include in their pedigreeone of the three specific founding sires, and the Godolphin Arabian is one of them).
There's a lot here adventure, triumph over adversity, a respect for other cultures, the care of the creatures that share our lives, and a healthy dose of humor about the absurdities of the powerful or elite.
