When reviewing this novel, it's difficult to ignore the initial expectations. One assumes that, in a sequel to Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam would--at least--be there. But, no, they're off on a trip that started before the first chapter and is still ongoing at the end.

We are left with a few characters we know (such as Col. Fitzwilliam and the Gardiners) and a lot of characters that we don't know from the next generation. The general idea is to cast the Darcy family as a new (and not too revised) version of the Bennett family, with a couple of boys thrown in.

The idea just doesn't work for many reasons: because we are aware of the connection; because we (and the author) are trying to Austenize the novel in our heads, because each Darcy daughter is constantly being compared to her equivalent Bennett daughter and this sub-text gets in the way; and, frankly, also because the cast of characters is enormous.

It would have been better to write a novel without the Darcy connection. The differences and, especially, the similarities and parallel story lines just get in the way.

Mr Darcy Daughters Elizabeth Aston 9780752859668 Books Reviews

I enjoyed this as well as other books in his series. It seems true to Jane Austen`s characters, making it believable as a continuation to Austen`s story.
Interesting to read about his daughters...as I have read everything on P&P that I can get my hands on - it is delightful to read how some decide Darcy and Lizzy have daughters, some sons and daughters...wonderful characters ad delightful scenery and wonderful interaction among the characters
There is something of the grave robber in a writer who pens a sequel to a dead author's story. I am talking about Elizabeth Aston who wrote "Mr. Darcy's Daughters A Novel," intended as a sequel to Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." I noted with interest that Elizabeth calls herself "Aston" while Jane, of course, was an "Austen." Cleverly chosen penname, I assume?

Still, remembering Colton's maxim that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery," and keeping on hand a good dose of Coleridge's "suspension of disbelief," I thought Aston pulled it off quite well.

In "Mr. Darcy's Daughters," the girls are perfectly modeled on the original Bennett girls of "Pride and Prejudice." Our modern Aston pretty much matches the 19th Century voice with a bit more modernity and some juicy scandal thrown into the plot. I was fine with both. While the Darcy twins at times were exasperating to the point where you want to smack them, after all is revealed and hurt feelings have been soothed, they were not that much wilder than their parents' generation.

Aston is not Austen, but she doesn't try to be. Unlike Austen, Aston is not a social critic or a writer who explores manners and mores of her time. She describes her creation as "full of societal intrigue and romantic high jinks," in other words an entertaining romance, and this she delivers. Elizabeth Aston is a skilled writer who gives us an entertaining good read. Graham Greene, whom I would call a great writer of an important body of literature, did not want his works labeled as such. He simply called them entertainments. I think what's good enough for Greene is good enough for Aston.
I really enjoyed this book ! Yes, there was a lack of Mr & Mrs Darcy, however this story carries weight on its own. I found it to be a good page turner, having excellent details and characters. Were you to remove the Darcy name this would be an excellent historical novel, well worth reading. If, however, you are looking for a glimpse into Fitzwilliam & Elizabeth's life after marriage, it is not here. Having characters familiar to us through Pride & Prejudice did make keeping track of who is who alot easier, without this familiarity one could easily be confused and 'get lost'.
Great story! You have to let go of the temptation to compare to Austen's work an Austen's characters (Fitzwilliam Darcys daughters would behave a little differently, and some things do not seem original - our heroine is the 2nd of 5 daughters just like Lizzy Bennett, etc....) But overall a fun read an I plan to read the next in the series.
Has a hint of Jane Austen flair, but is not in the same league. It is the closest we have... That being said, I found the characters not all that likeable. In my imagination, Mr. Darcy & Elizabeth would never had children that behaved like this. In the original, I believe Elizabeth's younger sisters acted as they did because they were allowed to run wild & had no disipline. Neither Darcy nor Elzabeth were that way. I can not imagine them raising their children any different.
If you go into this knowing it is not what Jane Austen would have written, but are looking for a romance that is not a "Fabio type" romance, this book is enjoyable.
I have read a great many pride and prejudice variations, and I seriously feel that this one gets a bad rap because people are not accepting it for what it is. This one is a different story with different characters, by an author who has a knowledge at how to keep a reader engaged. She takes Lizzy and Darcy, puts them in the background and focuses on their daughters. Aston is using Jane Austen's world to make a new story and it is a very entertaining read. Usually when new authors take their P and P adaptations too far away from Lizzy, Darcy, Jane and Bingley, I get bored and lose interest. This is the first P and P novel where those four were not there and I was still interested. Don't knock this novel until you try it.
