This is a richly detailed biography of The Who's genius, but troubled, drummer Keith Moon. I greatly enjoyed reading it, even though I'm not usually into biographies. For the precocious schoolboy who couldn't sit still, the drums were a godsend--Keith never looked back after his first drum lesson, ascending into rock superstardom with Pete, Roger, and John. But while The Who were flying higher than ever, Keith was careening into personal destruction from drugs and alcohol. Tony Fletcher chronicles Keith's life from childhood to his death in 1978, going through every destroyed hotel room, every kicked-over drum set, and seemingly every bottle of brandy. Because Fletcher doesn't spare any details of Keith's rampaging, you feel like you're watching a trainwreck in slow motion.

I appreciated that the author gave the women in Keith's life--his ex-wife Kim McLagan and girlfriend at the time of his death, Annette Walter-Lax--space to talk about their experiences with him. Mandy Moon, his daughter, makes a brief appearance as well. Those who actually lived with Keith and had to bear the brunt of his mentally and physically abusive behavior paint a far different picture from the charming prankster Keith of popular reputation. Fletcher doesn't focus so much on Keith's relationships with his Who bandmates, but other individuals like Keith's former personal assistant Dougal Butler, and The Who's management team contribute their experiences. The result is a detailed and well-rounded portrait from multiple perspectives. One other point the book did not touch much on is *why* Keith is considered one of the greatest drummers in rock. What makes him so great? Technical skill? Innovative techniques? It would have been nice if the author provided a little perspective on this. But then again, the book would have easily topped 700 pages if he included that material too. There may be other books that delve into that topic better.

Tony Fletcher took on the monumental task, of documenting the short, and amazing life of drummer Keith Moon. Considering the topics that arose, in the life of this complex and often troubled talent, Fletcher maintained an objective tone, and displayed a genuine affection for him. Unlike most journalists of the day, he chose not to sensationalize the unsavoury aspects of the story. Tony Fletcher exhibited class, and I found him to be a terrific, and intelligent writer. Thank you for shedding insight on my all-time favourite drummer, and providing information on the changing music scene of the time.
A very sad story of a talented but sad man. I have always loved The Who. Now that I have read more about Keith Moon, I listen to every song more closely and realize more what a brilliant musician he was. NOBODY has ever played like he did....and I learned from this book that the reason why was that he could not play like any other drummer either. He was one of a kind that met his fate far too early. The book is very good, but there is too much other information being provided which made the book very long and tedious. He was such a sad soul and kept making the same foolish mistakes over and over. With so much heartache and embarrassment, I kept wanting it to get to the end and give him peace(
Great read....highly recommended for Who fans (especially if you're a Moon fan). The author put a lot of credible work and effort into this book. Moon is a fantastic subject to write about. And, to anyone reading this who was born after 1978 (his death) (or thereabouts), please read this book. Music now is, well, not all that great. Read this book to see if you can gain appreciation for when music WAS good. Don't make the mistake of dismissing Moon because of his out of control lifestyle....the man could easily be considered a genius when it came to being the drummer for the Who. He is the reason they are an elite band. Thanks for reading !!
Am half way thru the book, and I can say it's very enjoyable. A good mix of moon's bio, his musical talent, his crazy antics and personal problems. The author also balances that out with good descriptions of the musical scene and trends of the day, the trials and tribulations of the rest of the Who as a band, and more. Its the crazy keith stories readers want and there's plenty of that here. Funny and crazy but also a little sad when you realize he had an undiagnosed condition of hyperactive disorder, unknown and untreated in those days. Unstable, violent, and no self control....mix that with a wild rock and roll lifestyle of sex drugs and rock and roll and alchohol and you have a total understanding of how this guy basically killed himself at a young age. For such an interesting book it does have several odd typos.....
A great and insightful read that concentrates on Keith Moon much more than The Who, although there is a lot about the band as well since their fates were so intertwined.
This is definitely a 'warts-and-all' portrait of The Who's bad boy drummer. It not only tells of all those legendary exploits (and busts a few myths about some of those exploits) but also tries to explain what drove him to do those outrageous things. Also, it doesn't pull any punches when it comes to his troubles with his wife, Kim and his never-there relationship with his daughter.
As a Who fan since 1965 and one that has seen them 8-9 times I have been reading all their bios. I have been in many bands in my lifetime and most of the guys I played with are like brothers to me. I could never understand how a band so great could be so dysfunctional with each other.
I met Roger at the Fillmore
east while on tour in 1969. All I saw of Keith that night was a pile of trays and dishes on the floor outside his hotel room. After reading this book I'm not sure if I am sorry or relieved I didn't meet him. I read Petes book 1st then Roger now Keith's. Dear Boy is a nice blend of all the stories of excess tempered with his kindness, innocence and extreme talent as a drummer. I liked this book the best of the three bios I have read so far. Of all the great musicians I would have to say Keith Moon was probably the most likely to not survive to die of natural causes.
